Woman held in poisoning death of teacher granted bail

ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — The woman arrested in relation to an incident involving the poisoning death of a teacher in Santa Cruz, St Elizabeth on November 19, was offered bail when she appeared in the Santa Cruz Resident Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Patricia Sinclair who is charged with house breaking and assault occasioning grievous bodily harm was offered bail in the sum of $400,000.

Sinclair is to report to the Black River Police every Monday and Saturday, to surrender all her travel documents and not to have any contact with the complainant or his family.

She was taken into custody after she was named among intruders who broke into a house at Horizon Park in Santa Cruz and threw a corrosive substance on the teacher Kerry Ann Powell and her male companion.

Powell died as a result of the ordeal and her companion hospitalized. Powell’s two children who were in the house at the time were unharmed.

Sinclair is to return to the Santa Cruz Resident Magistrate’s court on January20, 2015 when the case will again be mentioned.

Meanwhile, the court was told Wednesday that the file for a policeman, who also taken into custody in relation to the incident but later released, is to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecution DPP for a ruling.
