Pleasing the Weddy Weddy faithful
FOR the past 11 years lovers of reggae and dancehall music have made the pilgrimage to the headquarters of renowned sound system Stone Love on Burlington Avenue in St Andrew for Weddy Weddy.
The event showcases an authentic feast of music, fashion, food and a vibe that is quintessentially Jamaican.
Last Wednesday was no different. In fact, the vibe was only heightened by the presence of reggae-loving Briton David Rodigan and his team from BBC 1Xtra, including fellow selectors Toddla T and Seani B.
Completely at home with the genres, Rodigan was able to ignite the audience which included Jamaicans, as well as visitors to the island. Among the other countries which were represented at Weddy Weddy were Eritrea (north Africa), Slovakia, Italy, Germany and an ever-present Japanese Community.
“Weddy Weddy is a bag of fun,” Rodigan told the Jamaica Observer. I have known Wee Pow for years and it was great just playing alongside him. There is nothing different about when I played in Jamaica in in 1980s and ’90s, and now. Selectors still have to play music that speaks to what is happening in the music at the time.”
Here are some scenes from Weddy Weddy with David Rodigan.
