Rain ruins Wolmer’s-Norman Manley Grace Shield clash
Despite a seven-wicket haul by captain Denniel Griffths, Wolmer’s Boys’ had to settle for a share of the spoils with Norman Manley High after their Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/Grace Shield Group B encounter was affected by rain at Maxfield Park cricket ground yesterday.
Griffiths ended with figures of seven for 38 from 13 overs, which includes three maidens. The left-arm finger spinner was too much for the Norman Manley batsmen who were bowled over for a meagre 154.
Scores: Norman Manley 154 all out; Wolmer’s 102-2.
Wolmer’s won the toss and opted to bowl first. The decision worked in their favour as Griffths dismantled the top order with just 54 runs on the board. Norman Manley never recovered and lost wickets at regular intervals and were struggling at 107 for seven at lunch.
A 30-run, eight-wicket stand between top-scorer Giovanni Powell (42) and Khari Campbell (28 no), tried to repair the damage. But their depressing innings would be wrapped up shortly after Powell became Griffths’ sixth victim, adjudged leg-before-wicket.
The Heroes Circle-based boys were doing repair damage at 37 for two after eight overs when the rain halted play.
Over in Group D, defending champions Eltham High had to settle for a point after their opening encounter against Pembroke Hall High was also affected by rain.
Scores: Eltham 128-5; Pembroke Hall (did not bat).
In other Group D game. Spanish Town High defeated Jonathan Grant by eight wickets.
Scores: Jonathan Grant 59 all out; Spanish Town 63-2.
Ardenne High were also on the winning end, defeating Tivoli by 218 runs.
Scores: Ardenne 251-5; Tivoli 33 all out.
