Miss Universe viewing party
Although they expressed pride in Kaci Fennell’s performance at the Miss Universe pageant on Sunday, patrons who attended the official viewing party in New Kingston were disappointed with her fifth place finish.
From the moment she was announced as taking the fourth runner-up spot, many who gathered at the Triple Century Sports Bar began making their way from the venue. Their sullen faces told another story.
“She did very well, representing herself and the country,” said Ashlie Barrett.
Former Miss Jamaica World contestant Debbie-Ann McKreith was more forthright. ” I am disappointed with her fifth place. She got a second chance and fumbled on her question. But she did well.”
Fomer Miss Universe Bikini and Miss Jamaica World 1977 Sandra Kong heaped praises on the queen.
“She was excellent. She was herself, did her best and that’s all you can ask for.”
For Fennell’s best friend Candice Belnavis her BFF made her absolutely proud.
“She should be very proud of how well she did. She was an amazing representative for her country. I could not have asked for a better performance. I am in no way disappointed with her she did extremely well,” noted Belnavis.
Past Miss Universe Jamaica runner-up Kadyan Salmon was lost for words as she tried to articulate what she saw as her disappointment with the decision of the judges to award Fennell with fifth place.
“I can’t believe these judges… I am so disappointed with them… She did great considering the nerves,” said Salmon.
During the telecast, each glimpse of the pixie-haired beauty sent a roar throughout the packed nightclub owned by international cricketer Chris Gayle.
The screams and cheers grew even louder when Fennell made to into the top 15 contestants, then top 10 and ascended to the top five.
During the dreaded question and answer segment, the viewing party audience held their collective breath Judge Emilio Estefan was the brunt of their anger when he failed to articulate his question clearly due to his thick Spanish accent.
The ‘pageant watchers’ in the audience offered their answers to his question on ways to alleviate violence against women after she stumbled in her response.
However, many felt she redeemed herself when she responded to her second question , having made it into the top 5, citing reggae king Bob Marley and sprint sensation Usain Bolt as Jamaica’s gifts to the world.
