From the horse’s mouth
CHANGES OF EQUIPMENT
The Wayne DaCosta-trained Dripping In Gold continued the trend of trainers making a change of equipment that has led to success. After the three-year-old dark bay colt’s encouraging run on last, finishing four lengths in third position behind the impressive Royal Assault, Dripping In Gold returned on Sunday without the blinkers and was an easy winner. Dripping In Gold destroyed an albeit weak field of nine by nine lengths going over 1,400 metres with Robert Halledeen merely a pilot in the saddle.
TWO HORSES CLAIMED ON SUNDAY
Two horses were claimed on the nine-race programme at Caymanas Park last Sunday. The six-year-old bay mare, Sista Margarett was claimed from Dennis Thwaites by Denrick Chambers acting as both trainer and owner for $250,000. The Lawrence Freemantle-trained Big Bad Links was taken by Andrew McDonald for Paul McDonald also for $250,000 from the fourth race.
OLD-TIMER NEW KINGSTON WINS AGAIN
At age nine, the bay gelding New Kingston continues to perform. On Sunday, New Kingston notched his first win from two starts for the year. With Romario Saunders doing the riding honours, New Kingston won by one-and-three-quarter lengths from Woman Is Boss (Aaron Chatrie) and Fil’s Fancy (Jevvanne Erwin) in 0:58:4 seconds. New Kingston has now won 10 career races and earned close to $8 million.
ROVING STAR, WHO’S ORCHID RELEASE MAIDEN TAGS
Roving Star and Who’s Orchid have finally released their maiden tags. Ridden by Laird Bailey, the Kevin Brivette-conditioned Roving Star after 13 tries finally found the winning post in front. Roving Star was one-and-three-quarter lengths ahead of Twilight Rocket (Paul Ramsey) going over a mile. Then with O’Brien White riding for the sole female trainer at the Park, Margaret Parchment, Who’s Orchid got the job done. The offspring of Who’s Stayin On – Buck Orchid romped the final event over 1,000 metres straight, beating Blessings N’ Glory (Dane Nelson) and Naseen (Michael Grant) by four-and-a-half lengths.
A WIN FOR “DOLLY BABY”
Veteran jockey Ian ‘Dolly Baby’ Spence scored a rare win when he piloted Campesino to victory in the feature St Catherine Cup at Caymanas Park last Sunday.
“It has been a while since I rode a winner, so I am happy it finally happened. I have been coming so close on many occasions, so close, it was just my time to win and what a way to do it, in the feature event,” Spence said. It was Spence’s third mount for the year.
“This horse (Campesino) is a very talented horse. He has been running some good races and I was confident in his chances. The plan was to get a clean break and watch the pace up front and then make my move from the two furlong pole and that paid off. I am just happy with the victory and hope that it continues,” the veteran said.
