As The Ball Turns

Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams are the respective Male and Female champions of the Australian Open. Williams claimed her 19th Grand Slam title by getting past recurrent Russian rival Maria Sharapova. This leaves only legendary tennis great Steffie Graf with more titles (22) than the World Number One Williams. If she continues to meet Sharapova in finals, however, it might not be too long before she has no peer in tennis history. Serena defeated Sharapova for the 16th consecutive time, in a straight sets match of 6-3, 7-6(7-5). Djokovic, meanwhile, defeated popular Briton Andy Murray in four sets. The first two were close and went to tie break with Djokovic winning the first 7-6 (7-5) and Murray winning the second 6-7(7-4). Thereafter the Serbian pulled away though, winning the next two sets 6-3, 6-0.

Calabar High are national All-Island Under-16 and Under-19 basketball champions. Both the Red Hills Road seniors and juniors managed to overcome their rural counterparts on Friday to claim the respective titles from the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) High School Basketball Championship and end their seasons having defeated all their rivals. The Under-16s outlasted St Jago High 36-33 before the Under 19s put on a steady, mature performance to down Herbert Morrison Technical 70-67. Manchester High were the rural third-place, while Ardenne High claimed third from the corporate area.

As teams continue to build up to the start of the 2015 Cricket World Cup on February 13, Australia routed England to win the ODI tri-nation series, played along with India. After beating India by three wickets on Friday to set up a clash with Australia in Perth, England struggled to 166 all out, chasing Australia’s 278-8 off their 50 overs. They started brightly, removing Aaron Finch with nothing on the board and thereafter getting David Warner early, however a 141-run partnership in the middle order between Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh steadied the Australian innings from 46-3 at one point to set up James Faulkner for a late-innings onslaught on Chris Woakes to get them to a respectable total.Maxwell, having made 95, starred again with the ball, taking 4-46 after Mitchell Johnson had run through the English top-order. Ravi Bopara was the top scorer with 33 as the Englishmen collapsed to a 112-run defeat.

The Super Bowl XLIX takes place tonight with the New England Patriots coming up against the Seattle Seahawks. The game begins at 6:30.Two-time Super Bowl MVP, quarterback for the Patriots, Tom Brady will be hoping for his fourth Super Bowl Winner ring as he comes up against star running back Marshawn Lynch and the Seahawks. Brady, 33 touch downs for the season with, will carry the burden along with Comeback Player of the Year, tight end Rob Gronkowski for New England, while Russell Wilson, 20 touchdowns for the season, will be shepherding his Seahawks from quarterback. The Bill Belichick-coached Patriots will be hoping that there defence which has been good over the season can stop the explosive running of Lynch and matchup to the notoriously good Seattle defence while the Seahawks will be hoping that Brady’s last two Super Bowl appearances (2007 & 2011), which he lost, will come back to haunt him. Katy Perry will be performing during the halftime show.

Portuguese legend Luis Figo is among the nominees vying to end Sepp Blatter’s long-standing reign at the top of football’s world-governing body FIFA. Figo, a former World Player of the Year, was nominated by six European FAs, among them Portugal, Denmark, Luxembourg, Poland, Montenegro and Macedonia. His countrymen, also former stars for Portugal, Raul and Deco are two big name supporters of Figo who will have a tough task competing against Blatter as well as Jordanian royal Prince Ali bin al-Hussein. The former Barcelona and Real Madrid star has expressed confidence in breaking Blatter’s stronghold over the FIFA presidency.
