UWI moved to within one point of topping Zone A in the KSAFA Super League after edging leaders Real Mona 1-0 at the UWI playfield on Saturday.

Mitch Wright was on target for the second successive game and scored in the 51st minute to move UWI to 17 points from nine games, one less than Real Mona who remain on 18, also from nine games.

In other Zone A matches, Shortwood defeated August Town 2-0 at Barbican, while travelling Santos held Brown’s Town 1-1 at Airy Castle.

In Zone B, Maxfield Park clobbered Allman/Woodford 5-1 at Maxfield Park with goals from Cornelius Simms, Nickardo Williams, Ricardo Munroe, Richard Edwards and Akeem Moody.

Rae Town also came out on the winning end by edging Rockfort 1-0,while Mountain View and Bull Bay played to 0-0 stalemate at Mountain View.

At UWI, both teams turned up primed for the top-of-the-table clash and played their best game of the season.

“With this victory we are one point behind the leaders Mona and for this all praise must go to team effort as I thought the guys played well,” said UWI coach Marcel Gayle.

“It was the best disciplined game that we have played all season and (we) created some promising chances, but did not put away as much as we should have. Nonetheless, we came away with a victory and that is encouraging,” he added.

Real Mona manager Peter Moses was satisfied in defeat.

“A defeat was not a result that we had trained for coming into the game… (but) I must commend my team for their effort (as) it is one of the better games they have played.

“It was a good game even from a spectator’s point of view, the football was good and I am proud of how Real Mona played,” Moses ended.
