THE secretary of the Cornwall County cricket committee Chester Anderson has denied reports that members, at a meeting last Thursday, had decided to support the proposed no-confidence motion against Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) boss Wilford ‘Billy’ Heaven.

Anderson told the Sunday Observer that the meeting was called mainly to discuss whether they would be backing incumbent Whycliffe ‘Dave’ Cameron or former fast-bowling great Joel Garner for president of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) at the elections in March.

But Anderson expressed surprise that reports surfaced that there was consensus, at the meeting held in Montego Bay, St James, that they support the move against the JCA president.

“We did not take a decision on that [the motion against Heaven]; we did not even have that item on the agenda,” he said.

“At the meeting we decided that from a Cornwall County perspective we are supporting Dave Cameron to return as president of West Indies cricket. That was the main reason we called the meeting.

“After the meeting I was to write to the secretary of the JCA on the decision taken, only to be told later that there was news that at that meeting we decided that we would carry a no-confidence vote against the Jamaica Cricket Association president. That was not the case,” said the committee’s secretary.

Anderson, also the president of Trelawny CA, said he is unsure how the erroneous information was leaked.

“We don’t know who [did it]. We didn’t ask anybody to publicise what went on at the meeting. As secretary, I thought we were having a meeting to report to the JCA board what we felt about [the upcoming WICB elections],” he said.

The Cornwall County committee, which is said to have been dormant until being revived about two years ago, comprises members from Westmoreland CA, Hanover CA, St James CA, Trelawny CA and St Elizabeth CA.

Anderson said no representative from St Elizabeth was present at Thursday’s meeting, however, he explained that contact was made via teleconference.

The meeting was chaired by Deltonio Williams, the president of Westmoreland CA. The Observer tried to make contact with Williams yesterday, but calls to his telephone number were unsuccessful.

There has been disquiet at the administrative level of Jamaica’s cricket since February 3 when JCA board of directors voted 10-6 to support Barbadian Garner ahead of Jamaican Cameron for WICB head.

Things took a dramatic turn after a draft resolution was circulated on February 6, proposing a no-confidence motion against Heaven.

The document bore the signature of St James CA president Cecil Fletcher and was seconded by Gautam Kumaraswamy of Kensington Cricket Club. The motion, listing six reasons Heaven should step aside, is to be tabled at the JCA’s annual general meeting on Tuesday.

Among the reasons was the alleged “manipulated process used to support” West Indies cricket legend Garner.
