THERE has been tension at the administrative level of Jamaica’s cricket after the recent vote to support former cricket great Joel Garner instead of the embattled incumbent Whycliffe ‘Dave’ Cameron for the presidency of the West Indies Cricket Board.

Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) secretary Fritz Harris confirmed the split to the Jamaica Observer recently when he said some members called for the decision to be overturned.

The rift became clearer when a no-confidence motion against JCA president Wilford ‘Billy’ Heaven was proposed to be tabled at the association’s annual general meeting today.

The draft resolution carried the signature of St James Cricket Association president Cecil Fletcher, who had also offered his resignation as JCA board director. It was seconded by Gautam Kumaraswamy of Kensington Cricket Club.

The document said the individuals who signed had “lost confidence in the leadership” of Heaven. There was a list of six reasons, including the allegation that Garner was nominated via a flawed process.

Also on the list was the alleged “unconstitutional election process” used to fill the post of second vice-president of JCA when Courtney Walsh vacated it. St Catherine Cricket Club’s Osman Dann is now in that role.

Other items included the claimed “failure to remove a director” from the board for poor attendance; absence of the Minor and Junior Cup cricket competitions; failure to encourage proper corporate governance; and the poor financial status of the JCA.

Issues usually discussed at the AGM include the staging of various local competitions for clubs and parishes, hosting of international games as well as sponsorship and fundraising. The JCA’s audited financials are also expected to be presented.

Heaven, elected in November 2013, just completed the first of a two-year tenure as president.
