Young Boyz bruised

As The Ball Turns

1 The U-17 Reggae Boyz did not get off to the best of starts at theCONCACAF U-17 Championship last Friday, after losing 2-o to the thehosts Honduras. The Jamaicans should play again today (at 3:30 localtime, facing Guatemala at the same stadium) even though there are someminor injuries in the camp.

Deshane Beckford, Ajeanie Talbott, Jahlanie Hammond, Antoniel

Mullings, Akeem Chambers, Javain Brown, Fabian Grant, Demar James, and

Donovan Dawkins all boarded the elevator on the third floor at the the

Hilton Princess Hotel in San Pedro Sula before it crashed in the parking

garage, zipping past their stop on the ground floor. James and Beckford

came out the worst with knee and back injuries.

In other group action Guatemala defeat the Sofa Warriors 4-1, while USA crushed Cuba 5-0.

2 World Number Four Rafael Nadal reached his first final since his French Open win in June and since his return from injury in the Argentina Open.

The Spaniard faces Argentine Juan Monaco for the title after defeating Monaco’s countryman Carlos Berlocq 7-6 (9-7) 6-2. Nadal trailed 1-6 at one point in the tie-break but recovered brilliantly showing no sign of his wrist issues to keep his hopes of equalling the most clay titles ever (46) in this tournament alive.

3 This week in Cricket World Cup 2015 has proved a week of two halves for the West Indies.

Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels put on a batting clinic midweek to see

West Indies to 372 for 2 against Zimbabwe. Samuels had an unbeaten 133,

while Gayle scored the first ever World Cup double century, clattering

16 sixes and 10 fours on his way to 215.

The bowlers then had Zimbabwe out for 289 inside 45 overs to seal a 73-run win.

Against South Africa, however, the Windies were on the wrong end of

the record-breaking with AB de Villiers scoring the quickest 150 on his

way to 162 in South Africa’s 408. The Windies were then all out for 151,

losing by 257.

In other top games New Zealand beat fellow hosts Australia by one

wicket in a thriller, while England were thrashed by nine wickets at the

hands of Sri Lanka.

4 The newly christened Gibson-McCook relays saw the usual stellar competition yesterday with Usain Bolt making his season debut amid top high-school competition. Bolt’s Racers team gave him too much to do on anchor with University of Technology Jamaica coming out victorious.

Meanwhile, Calabar and Kingston College impressed, with Calabar coming out victorious in the Boys Class One and Two 4×100 relays. Their team of Edward Clarke, Michael O’Hara, Jelani Walker, and Seanie Selvin ran a record 39.32 seconds ahead of St Jago in Class One while the Class Two team pipped KC in 40.86 seconds. KC won the Class Three and Four equivalents.

5 The Formula One season starts with the Australian Grand Prix on March 13-15 with the final testing day having passed this weekend in Barcelona.

Valtteri Bottas of Williams was quickest in 1:23.063 ahead of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel. Record-breaking teenager Max Verstappen had a good run in his Red Bull car in fourth with a time of 1:24.527, ahead of teammate Daniel Ricciardo.

Mercedes, with Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton are again strong favourites for the season.
