A head-turning standout among the sometimes staid diplomatic corps, the style-loving wife of departing Japanese Ambassador to Jamaica Yasuo Takase prepares to return home to their native homeland any day now. The poised and gracious Mrs had that certain je nais sais quoi which kept our shutterbugs always ready to click at the sight of her picture-perfect wardrobe choices that were a marriage of dramatic edge and chic sensibility.

Just ahead of her hubby’s farewell reception last Thursday night at their official residence in the city’s much-desired Golden Triangle suburb, the classy Takase — joined by her other half and their Tokyo-resident medical student daughter Yuria — entertains convo with us in the foyer of their diplomatic abode.

What is your cocktail of choice?

A glass of white wine.

We’ve loved your fashion sense and seeing you out and about on the diplomatic scene here. Are you a fan of the Jamaican style of dress?

I like Jamaican fashion, it’s very sexy and colourful.

What did you enjoy most about your stay here?

Like my husband, I loved the people of this country. I enjoyed every lunch and dinner engagement with the friends we made.

We saw you taking in performances by the side of the stage at last year’s Reggae Sumfest, and spotted you at Weddy Weddy at Stone Love’s headquarters. What do you love about reggae and dancehall music?

Many years ago, I heard Third World’s Try Jah Love and it was the only reggae song I had ever heard at the time, but it greatly impressed me. I have loved the music while here. Last weekend I went to the Blue Mountain Music Festival, and Ninja Man’s birthday bash recently.

What is it about reggae music that you like?

It makes me very happy.

LBD or jeans?

I don’t wear jeans (laughs).

Flats or stilettos?

Definitely heels. I only have one pair of flat shoes.

You have fantastic skin. Share your beauty secrets.

I eat only natural foods. And it’s very important to wash your face.

In a sentence, who is Sayoko?

I love my family, am always trying to be happy, and am thankful for what I have.

Did you discover any Jamaican designers that you will be adding to your wardrobe?

My friend Yodit Hylton, wife of Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce Anthony Hylton introduced me to the designer Barry Moncrieffe in Montego Bay, but I haven’t bought any of his designs yet.

What will you miss most about Jamaica?

Everything. The nature and the people. I loved Hellshire and Ocho Rios. I will also miss Terra Nova All-Suite Hotel and the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. I used to sip tea at both hotels and chat with my friends.
