JRC FINDS THIS IS IT FIT AND PROPER TO RACE
On February 17, the Jamaica Racing Commission (JRC) conducted an investigation under Section 25 of the JRC Act (1977) into a claim made by trainer Leroy Fearon on September 13, 2014. The claim was voided by the stewards. The Commission heard evidence from Milade Azan, previous owner of This Is It, Fearon and Robert Clark, chairman of the stewards’ panel for the race meeting. The stewards reported to the Commission that Fearon was placed on the forfeit list on Thursday, September 11, 2014, thus making him ineligible to claim at the meet held on September 13. The Accounting Department of Caymanas Track Limited was instructed to withhold transfer from Fearon’s account with regards to the claim made by him. The stewards instructed Fearon in writing to deliver the horse to the pre-race owner Azan. Fearon then sought and received advice to appeal the decision of the stewards. Fearon later purchased This Is It from Azan, registered the transfer and withdrew the appeal. The JRC then convened an investigation and after considering the evidence presented and submissions from Douglas Thompson, attorney representing Fearon and Clark, the Commission ruled that the horse This Is It was validly registered and eligible to race as of February 17, 2015. The Commission has also requested a report from the stewards as to the problems identified with the operation of the claiming system. This submission was expected to be presented to the Commission by March 3.
FOUR HORSES CLAIMED ON SATURDAY
Four horses were claimed on the nine-race programme at Caymanas Park on Saturday. Tatty’s Bad Gal was claimed by Donovan Plummer for himself from Lawrence Freemantle for $180,000, and Frankenstorm was taken from Anthony Nunes by Neive Graham for O’Shaun Connection for $180,000 in the second race. In the third race, Boris McIntosh claimed New Kingston for Deletta Brusa from Neive Graham for $550,000. El Patron was claimed from Denrick Chambers by Delroy Wisdom for Wesley Perkins for $180,000 in the fourth race.
CHANGE OF EQUIPMENT
The Wayne DaCosta-trained All Correct continued the trend of trainers making a change in equipment that has led to success.
All Correct (Storm Craft – Royal Pizza), with Shane Ellis in the saddle, returned on Saturday without the blinkers and was a comfortable two-and-a-half length winner in the Bonnie Blue Flag Trophy feature, an Open Allowance event for three-year-olds and upward going over 1,820 metres. The winning time was 1:55:2 minutes.
Awesome Cat makes winning start, Taranis breaks maiden tag
Awesome Cat made a noticable start to his career on Saturday. Ridden by Richard Lunan for trainer Carl Anderson, Awesome Cat came with a strong surge in the last furlong of the 1,000-metre contest to beat D Girl For Me and Little Tuff Man by one-and-a-quarter lengths in 1:03:3 minutes. On his second outing, Taranis (Omar Walker) was an easy three and three-quarter-length winner over seven furlongs in a three-year-old maiden race. Taranis is trained by Richard Azan.
