Accused priest killer remanded
THE Kingston man accused of the July 2013 stabbing death of Father Charles Brown is scheduled to return to the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on March 16 when a bail application is expected to be made by his lawyer.
The accused, Rohan Deacon, a resident of Seaview Gardens, Kingston 11, who reportedly went into hiding following the death of the clergyman, was formally charged with murder on March 1, after he was captured by the police in Trout Hall in Clarendon on February 19.
When the matter was mentioned, Deacon’s attorney, Oliver Smith, attempted to make a bail application but was instructed by Senior Magistrate Judith Pusey to postpone the hearing until the following Monday.
The magistrate explained that the case file was submitted to the court on the morning of the matter and that the prosecutor would need time to read the file in order to respond to the application resulting in Deacon being remanded.
According to the allegations outlined by the prosecutor, on July 25, 2013, about 8 pm, a white Suzuki motor car which was owned by Archbishop of Kingston Charles Dufour, and driven by Father Brown, was found abandoned in bushes adjacent to Tom Gringley Drive in Plantation Heights, St Andrew.
On July 29, about 2:00 pm the decomposing body of Father Brown was found with multiple stab wounds to the upper body, head and left hand.
The prosecutor further reported that a knife blade that was found at the scene and body parts were taken to the forensic laboratory for testing and that a DNA test found that the blood that was on the underwear of the accused matched the blood of the deceased man.
Following the discovery of the body the prosecutor alleged that the police made several calls for Deacon to surrender but that he went into hiding and was recently found living in a one-room shack in Clarendon.
It is reported that Deacon when he was apprehended gave the police a false name but later gave them his correct name and a statement outlining events that led to the death of the priest.
Attorney Shauna-Gay Mitchell is also representing Deacon.
