Granville, Wadadah suffer surprise defeats in Super League
GRANVILLE, St James — Granville FC and Wadadah FC’s drive to the semi-finals of the Jamaica Football Federation’s Charley’s JB Rum Western Confederation Super League was slowed on Tuesday after they went down to surprise losses in second-round action.
Despite arriving at the venue with just 11 players and finishing with 10 due to injury, Holland United scored their second win over Granville, winning 1-0. Wadadah FC, for their part, gave up a second-half lead to lose 2-1 to Beaches Negril in Negril.
Meanwhile, Savannah SC benefited from Violet Kickers’ no-show for their game at Frome and the three points moved them to within one of leaders Sandals Whitehouse, whom they will meet on Sunday.
Sandals Whitehouse, who were surprised by Montego Bay Boys Club on Saturday going down 3-0, lead with 37 points from 16 games, followed by Savannah SC on 36 from 15 games, Granville FC on 30 from 15 games and Wadadah FC on 28 from 14 games.
Boys Club and Village United are six points back of the top-four positions on 22 points each, while three teams — Salt Marsh United, Beaches Negril and Holland United — are all on 15 points. Tomorrow’s People are on 14 with Jericho Rangers on 12 and Violet Kickers on five.
On Tuesday, Dewayne Jumpp gave the visiting Wadadah FC the lead in the 57th minute with his fourth goal of the season, but Julian Richards equalised in the 68th minute and Paul Salmon scored the winner in the 79th as Beaches Negril avenged a first-round 3-1 loss.
At Granville Community Centre, Holland United, who had won the first round game 2-1, showed up with just 11 players, but held off the home team before Davian Graham scored what turned out to be the winner in the 67th minute.
