A former employee of Courts Jamaica Limited, who admitted to stealing a little over $1 million from the company, is scheduled to return to the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on April 7 for sentencing.

Thirty-three-year-old Kerry-Gale Cunningham pleaded guilty to two counts of larceny by a servant when he appeared in court on Monday before Senior Magistrate Judith Pusey.

He also indicated his willingness to make restitution and, as a result, his bail was extended for him to return to court with the money.

Cunningham was employed as an administrative manager at Courts Bargain Centre on King Street in downtown Kingston.

The prosecutor told the magistrate that as a part of Cunningham’s responsibilities he was to ensure that the lodgements were properly accounted for in the company’s record, and also that they were lodged in the company’s account or handed over to the manager.

According to the prosecution, sometime in December last year, under Cunningham’s watch, $583,000, went missing and was not accounted for.

The court also heard that following that, on another occasion in January this year $497,000 also went missing under Cunningham’s watch.

The matter was subsequently reported to the police and Cunningham, when questioned about the money, admitted that he was responsible for taking it.

The prosecutor told the court that Cunningham, when cautioned, told the police that “I was hoping that I would be able to replace the money at an appropriate time but it did not materialise”.
