KC, Campion, St Jago, Ardenne claim table tennis titles
KINGSTON College and Campion High emerged Under-19 boys’ and girls’ winners, while Campion College and Ardenne High won the Under-16 equivalent as the urban finals of the ISSA/Security Professionals Table Tennis Competition ended on Thursday at Jamaica College Auditorium.
KC clipped St Jago 3-2 in boys’ Under-19, Campion turned back Immaculate 3-1 in girls’ Under-19, while St Jago beat KC 3-1 in boys’ Under-16, and Ardenne outscored St Jago 3-1 in girls’ Under-16.
KC are coached by Colin McNeish, St Jago by Richard Davidson and Everald Tucker, Campion and Ardenne by Sandra Riettie and Immaculate by Carl Lee.
In the Under-19 boys, KC were regaining the title which they have won more than any other school over the years. They were three-time defending champions last year when they were beaten by St Jago in the final and have now won the event 13 times in the last 20 years.
Campion’s Under-19 girls last won in 2011, and have won three times in the last 20 years. Play in the Under-16 category was started in 2008 and this is the third time that St Jago boys were winning, while Ardenne girls have now won twice, the other time being in 2011.
KC and St Jago reached the final by topping their respective three-team semi-final groups. In Group One St Jago trounced Campion 4-1 and clipped St George’s 3-2, while in Group Two KC blanked Wolmer’s Boys’ 5-0 and whipped Norman Manley 4-1. St George’s pipped Campion 3-2 and Wolmer’s Boys’ nipped Norman Manley 3-2 for second place in the groups.
In girls’ Under-19, Campion and Immaculate qualified for the final from being the top two teams in their preliminary round one group category.
KC and St Jago also topped their respective three-team groups in boys’ Under-16
semi-finals to reach the final. In Group One
KC crushed JC 4-1 and blanked Wolmer’s Boys’ 5-0, while in Group Two St Jago edged both Hillel and Campion by identical 3-2 scores. JC blanked Wolmer’s Boys’ 5-0 and Campion squeezed past Hillel 3-2 for second places in the groups.
In girls’ Under-16 semis, St Jago clipped Wolmer’s Girls’ 3-2 and Ardenne blanked Immaculate 3-0 for both teams to progress to the final.
In play-offs for third-place trophies, St George’s pipped Wolmer’s Boys 3-2′ in boys’ Under-19, Campion clipped JC 3-2 in boys’ Under-16, and Wolmer’s Girls’ edged Immaculate 3-2 in Under-16. There was no third-place play-off in girls’ Under-19.
In individual results in the KC vs St Jago boys’ Under-19 final, Dexter Mears trounced Rohan Brown 3-0, Sadiki Hines outscored Alexander Henry 3-1 and Twani Price outlasted Kyle Gordon 3-2, for KC’s three wins. Nadre Cephas squeezed past Korey Moulton 3-2 and Kyle Davidson whipped Kwami Watson 3-0 for St Jago’s two consolation victories.
Janique Lee won two matches for Campion in the Under-19 girls’ final against Immaculate. She eased past Chinelle Miller 3-0 and overcame Vanessa Moo Young 3-1, as Isabelle Chin cruised past Duvania Evans 3-0 for Campion’s third triumph. Moo Young strolled past Tainyan Henry 3-0 to pull one back for Immaculate.
In the St Jago versus KC boys’ Under-16 final, Bevon Antonio trounced Kevin Davey 3-0, Matthew Morrison outplayed Ricardo Hall 3-1 and Justin Mullings turned back Gary Douce 3-1, for St Jago’s three victories. Dennis Daniels crushed Lorenzo Johnson 3-0 to pull one back for KC.
