McAnuff, Mattocks, Richards confirmed for international friendlies
Three of the Reggae Boyz who were part of the victory squad for the 2014 Caribbean Cup are confirmed for the international friendly against Los Llaneros of Venezuela on March 27 at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.
Fresh after winning the 2014 Caribbean Cup, the Boyz will be looking to create more positive memories on the soil they clinched their sixth hold of the Caribbean Cup. Jamaica will be using this friendly against Venezuela as part of its preparation for the 2015 Copa America tournament, as well as the CONCACAF Gold Cup alongside the 2018 World Cup Qualifiers.
Twenty-four-year-old Vancouver Whitecaps front man Darren Mattocks, who was the Golden Boot winner of the 2014 Caribbean Cup alongside Kevin Molino of Trinidad and Tobago and Kervens Belfort of Haiti, has been confirmed to be a part of the squad. The 5’10” striker scored three goals in four matches in that tournament. Mattocks will be looking for a similar purple patch of form in 2015 by putting his strengths of clinical finishing and agility to good use.
Another player who will be involved is 33-year-old midfielder Jobi McAnuff. McAnuff, who made his debut for Jamaica in 2002, was a fan favourite during the 2014 Caribbean Cup. Despite not scoring in the tournament, his dribbling ability and tenacity brought excitement to the crowd in the Montego Bay Sports Complex. He did, however, score for Jamaica in the 5-4 penalty shoot-out victory over Trinidad and Tobago in the final.
Another name that will be familiar to the people of St James is the diminutive Dane Richards. Richards, who was born in Montego Bay, St James, will be looking to impress in his parish of birth with his speed, penetrative crosses and passing skills.
In 45 matches for Jamaica, he has 10 goals to his name and the recently re-signed New York Red Bulls player will be looking to add more to this tally.
The full squads will be released over the upcoming days, as the Reggae Boyz are also slated to engage Caribbean neighbours Cuba at the same venue on Monday, March 30.
