THE Office of the Contractor General (OCG), in its report tabled in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, said it found nepotism, favouritism, and conflicts of interest in the awarding of contracts to relatives and persons affiliated with former mayor of Lucea, Shernet Haughton. The report highlighted that the former mayor awarded contracts to her spouse, sisters and a brother along with daughters and son, as well as brother and sister-in-law. The OCG has recommended that Haughton relinquish her post as councillor for the Green Island Division of the Hanover Parish Council. Yesterday, the Jamaica Observer solicited some views in Hanover on the OCG’s recommendation.

I believe that she should resign to allow the investigations to continue. Based on the OCG’s report and in an effort to promote good governance she should step down.

I do think that she should step aside. …If the person say that you are guilty and you say you are innocent, then take yourself out of the spotlight and allow the process to take place. If at the end you are found innocent, you should be reinstated.

It is in her best interest to step down as councillor of the Green Island Division so as not to [stain] her character. Then again, we do not have all the contents to draw a conclusion, but still she should step down.

If she violated the rules and ethics, then she has no choice but to resign. The more professional thing to do in order to maintain her credibility is to resign. That is the more credible option.
