Jackson jets to T&T rally
JETCON Racing’s rallysport team of Joel Jackson and Dmitri Dawkins left the island on Tuesday to tackle the 2015 running of Rally Trinidad & Tobago this weekend, March 27 through 29.
“We finished sixth overall, and third in our Group N class last time,” Jackson told Auto.
The crew heads back to the demanding rally they first ran in 2013 with renewed confidence. That confidence comes from now having previous experience in the event.
“The roads are a lot different to what we are used to here in Jamaica,” Jackson said as he recounted their last visit.
The Trinidadian stages tend to be narrow, with lots of sweeping corners and blind crests making them more technical in comparison to Jamaica’s wide open fast stages. Pace notes are crucial. Making them even more dangerous are the gutters that line many of the stages.
“You can’t afford to run off,” he said.
Also raising their confidence level is the fact that a brand new car awaits Jetcon Racing in Trinidad. According to the team, they’ve acquired a proper Group N Subaru Impreza, built in Argentina by Baratec, an authorised Prodrive agent. Subaru specialist Prodrive was responsible for Subaru’s World Rally Championship programme.
The new car boasts modern technology that allows it to outpace the old GC8 Subaru Impreza WRX STI. It will return to Jamaica, to eventually do battle with Jackson’s primary rival, Kyle Gregg and his Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX.
