FORMER national Under-13 girls’ champion Mia Mahfood took her first Under-15 title, as Tobias Levy and Tajhia Lumley successfully defended their Under-11 and Under-17 titles, respectively, at the All Jamaica Junior Squash Championships, held recently at the Liguanea Club in Kingston.

Young Tobias Levy blew through the field in the Under-11 age group defending his title without losing a game. Levy beat Brady Holmes 11-1, 11-5, 11-6 to relegate him to second place and also registered an 11-1, 11-4, 11-4 win against Sebastian Azan, who finished third.

Lumley was in equally good form, beating Adam Ardito 11-7, 11-5, 11-1 and Luke Roberts 11-7, 11-8, 9-11, 11-5 to retain his Under-17 title. However, in the Under-15 age group, Ardito was in full control, beating runner-up Joe Rousseau 11-7, 11-3, 11-1 and third-place finisher, 2014 Under-13 champion Sebastian Levy 11-3, 11-5, 11-2.

In the girls’ competition, Mahfood, who won three consecutive Under-13 titles before moving up to Under-15, comfortably won the round robin competition, beating runner-up Mia Lake 11-7, 11-9, 11-5 and third-place finisher Mira Handa 9-11, 11-3, 11-3, 11-7. Lake and Handa had a memorable battle which Lake eventually won 11-8, 11-9, 15-17, 11-7.

In the boys’ Under-19 age group, Jake Mahfood took the title without dropping a game. Mahfood’s stiffest competition came from Lumley, who shook off a lopsided first game to mount a serious challenge, but still went down 11-2, 12-10, 12-10 to the champion. Lumley also faced a stiff challenge from newcomer Andrew Bicknell but eventually prevailed 11-6, 7-11, 10-12, 11-7, 11-4 before having his pursuit of the Under-19 title ended by Mahfood.

National Junior Programme Manager Gill Binnie said, “The Juniors are showing reasonable good form at this time and their training regime will continue over the next few months as we focus on preparing for the Caribbean Championships in July.”
