A class of their own
Extraordinary performances from Calabar High’s Michael O’Hara and St Andrew Technical’s Ayesha Champagnie saw them being named Overall Champion Athletes of last week’s ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls Athletics Championships at the National Stadium.
After last year’s debacle where he failed to win a gold medal and false-started in the 100m final, O’Hara roared back with three gold medals, including beating IAAF World Youth Championships and Youth Olympic Games gold medallist Jaheel Hyde of Wolmer’s Boys in the Class One 110m hurdles in one of the thrillers of the meet.
O’Hara also won the 100m-200m sprint double for 27 points and got a fourth gold medal on the Class One 4X100m relay team that set a new meet record 39.08 seconds.
He was also the Class One champion boy beating Edwin Allen’s Demar Gayle, who won the shot put-discus throw double and Jamaica College’s Obrien Wasome, who won the long-triple jump double, both with 18 points.
St Elizabeth Technical’s Jauavney James scored 21 points in Class Two, winning the 1500m, second in the 800m and fourth in the 400m; Kingston College’s Rasheeda Downer, the Calabar pair of Dejour Russell and Christopher Taylor and Jamaica College’s Paketo Dudley all scored 18 points as well.
Green Island High’s 200m champion Javier Johnson was the top scorer in Class Three with 16 points followed by STETHS’ Dwight Mason (14 points) and Munro College’s Rushane Fullerton (13).
Champagnie won the overall title after she scored 30 points from winning the heptathlon open, the Class One javelin and shot put, the latter in a new record 14.27m to edge Holmwood Technical’s Lisa Buchanan who won the Class One 800m and 1500m and 3,000m Open for 27 points.
Natalliah White of St Jago High, the 100m and 200m champion shared Class One honours with Buchanan, while Sasaha-Gay Whyte of Vere Technical and Edwin Allen’s Rochelle Fraser both got 12 points.
Hydel’s Yanique Dayle won Class Two with 19 points, edging three other athletes — sprint double champion Shellece Clarke of Edwin Allen, shot put-discus champion Fiona Richards of Buff Bay and St Jago’s Tassanna Hickling.
Kimone Shaw, who won the Class Three 100m-200m double and Edwin Allen’s Annia Ashley, who won the long-high jump double, tied for Class Three champion with 18 points, two more than St Catherine High’s Anna-Kay Allen (16 points).
In Class Four, St Jago’s Joanne Reid who won the 100m-200m double and was crowned champion ahead of Edwin Allen’s Kevona Davis, who was second in both and Wolmer’s Girls Valissa Brown (12 points).
