Kim Brown Lawrence –JLP’s hope to ending political drought in Brown’s Town
THE Jamaica Labour Party(JLP) is confident that candidate for the Brown’s Town Division Kim Brown Lawrence will end its 30-year political drought in that area.
The political party reportedly last won that seat in the St Ann Parish Council in 1981.
The party is counting on the 35-year-old, who was officially presented as the party’s representative at the recent divisional conference, to unseat deputy mayor of the St Ann Parish Council Delroy Redway and end the Peoples National Party (PNP) three decades reign in the division.
Several supporters at the conference said Brown Lawrence is the best candidate the division has had hence their confidence that the ‘first timer’ will be victorious in the next Local Government election.
Those who spoke with the Jamaica Observer North East said Brown Lawrence has been working in the division, assisting many needy people and should therefore do even more as an elected representative.
Addressing supporters at the conference, Brown Lawrence said Brown’s Town has been neglected for far too long because the people have voted one way over the years.
If given the chance, Brown Lawrence said she will represent the division well. She told supporters that she has started to do all she can in the division and if elected she will continue to represent the people.
“I keep a fish fry the last Friday of every month for the people of my community,” she said, adding that this has been the major fund raiser to assist the needy and disabled in the community. Brown Lawrence said she has already started to spearhead several projects in the division, which includes building a home for a mother and her children who had been living in extreme poverty stricken conditions for years.
While party supporters are confident in a victory for Brown Lawrence, Mike Henry, chairman of Area Council Three and member of Parliament for Central Clarendon said that it will require everyone’s effort for the party to be successful.
“There is no one person who can beat the PNP; It takes all of us,” he said.
In the meantime, another party stalwart, Ernest Smith, assured supporters that the party is united.
“A united JLP as we are today is unbeatable. Do not allow anyone to tell you that we do not have a united team,” he stated.
Opposition Leader Andrew Holness, who also spoke at the conference, said his party intends to change the status quo which exists in Jamaica, one which now allows persons to be comfortable with the situations they are in.
