John Mills hold onto lead in Junior High Champs
JOHN Mills maintained their early lead with a combined 91.5 points after nine completed finals at the end of day two of the 2015 Institute of Sports (INSPORTS)/Hi-Lyte Junior High Schoolboys and Girls Track and Field Championships at the Stadium East Track yesterday.
The three-day championships come to a close today, with events scheduled to start at 9:00 am. Approximately 62 finals are scheduled to be contested and the day promises to be an exciting one with close finishes.
In second place, and looking extremely dangerous, are defending champions Windward Road with 69.5 points. They are followed by Calabar (35.5), Louise Bennett-Coverley (33.5) and Mico Practising with 28 points.
John Mills lead the Girls’ section with 60 points, followed by Windward Road with 41 points, Louise Bennett-Coverley (28.5), Calabar (26.5) and Mico Practising (19 points).
John Mills also are in front in the Boys’ section with 31.50 points, while Windward Road are second with 28.5 points.
Coach of Windward Road Oral Whilby said the team is sitting pretty good and he said he does not see John Mills winning.
“Windward dominated the young classes 4×100 metres relay yesterday, and today we should also dominate the other relays classes for boys and girls. I believe we are on the right track, despite a few slight injuries to some of my athletes,” Whilby said.
Meanwhile, Ransford Spaulding, coach of John Mills, expressed confidence that his athletes are going to do our best.
“We going on a mission and the team which makes the least number of mistakes will win the championships, and with the help of God we can pull it off,” said Spaulding, who expects another battle royal against Windward Road.
The Girls’ shot put open event produced the first record of the championships when Anna-Kay Emanuel of Louise Bennett-Coverley threw 10.39 metres to break the old mark of 10.03 metres, held by Kiona Bradshaw since 2011. She broke the record at least three times yesterday to also capture the gold medal.
Finishing second was the John Mills pair of Ashley Miller who threw 9.77 metres and Jonie Morgan with 9.10 metres.
The Boys’ 1500 metres open was won by Billy Watson of Melrose in a winning time of 4:42.11, ahead of Renardo Johnson of Mount Moreland 4:42.66 and Torrin Brown of John Mills 4:52.77.
