Chelsea close in

European Round-up

Chelsea almost ‘champs’

EPL: The race for the Premier League title seems to be all but over as Chelsea defeated Manchester United 1-0 courtesy of an Eden Hazard strike. Manchester United had the majority of the possession but was unable to create any clear cut chances because of a solid Chelsea defence. The win leaves The Blues 10 points clear over Arsenal who both have six games left to play.

Manchester City got back on track after last week’s disappointing display against Manchester United with a 2-0 victory over West Ham United. They were not the better side during the opening stages and were extremely fortunate when a Jesus Navas cross was misdirected by James Collins into the back of the net. Sergio Aguero then netted in the 36th minute for his 20th league goal of the season. City remain at fourth with the win but now only trail United by one point.

Newcastle United 1 – Tottenham Hotspur 3

Stoke City 2 – Southampton 1

Crystal Palace 0 – West Bromwich Albion -2

Barca back to normal

La Liga: Barcelona ensured that they would not be overtaken this round by their Clasico counterparts through a 2-0 win over Valencia. The mercurial Luis Suarez opened the scoring in the first minute after a traditional Messi assist. The Blaugarana were almost pegged back in the 10th minute but Claudio Bravo pulled off an amazing penalty save to stop Parejo from Valencia. Messi then scored with the last kick of the goal to grab his 400th career goal for Barcelona and all three points.

Real Madrid maintained the pressure in the La Liga title race with a 3-1 victory over Malaga. Sergio Ramos scored the first from a Ronaldo free kick.. James Rodriguez finished off a magnificent team goal in the 67th minute to double the lead after Cristiano missed a penalty in the first half, before Malaga got a consolation in the 71st . Ronaldo sealed the scoring in the 90thminute with a tap in. Real Madrid remains two points behind Barcelona with six games remaining.

Deportivo 1 – Atletico Madrid 2

Athletic Bilbao 4 – Getafe 0

Granada 1 – Sevilla 1

No domestic problems for Bayern

Bundesliga: Bayern Munich seem to have recuperated from their shock Champions League defeat mid-week with a 2-0 win against Hoffenheim. Young Sebastian Rode was the only scorer for the injury-plagued team as the other goal was turned in by a Hoffenheim player. Bayern lead the table by 12 points.

Borussia Dortmund showed no ill-effects of having manager Jurgen Klopp announcing his departure from the team at the end of the season. They beat Paderborn 3-0 courtesy of goals from Shinji Kagawa, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Bayer Leverusaken 4 – Hannover 0

SC Freiburg 2 – Mainz 3

Wolfsburg 1 – Schalke 1

Juve march on

Serie A: Juventus beat Lazio 2-0 in their top-of-the-table clash on Saturday. The game never lived up to its billing, however, as Lazio were outplayed in every way. Top scorer Carlos Tevez opened the scoring and was confident throughout despite his contract struggles, while Bonucci was also on the scoresheet. The win leaves them 15 points clear at the top of the table.

Elsewhere in Serie A, Internazionale and AC Milan could only muster a 0-0 draw in one of the most underwhelming Milan derbies to date. Chances for both teams were few and far between even though both teams had goals disallowed. AC Milan still lead Inter by 1 point with the former in ninth and the other in 10th.

Roma 1 – Atalanta 1

Napoli 3 – Caligari 0

Verona 1 – Udinese 1
