Puddy Pooh leads 14 entered for Oaks
PUDDY Pooh, winner of the 1,000 Guineas, headlines the provisional field of 14 runners entered for the 76th running of the Jamaica Oaks on Saturday. The Oaks is the third Classic on the racing calendar and is confined to three-year-old fillies, with all carrying 57.0 kilogrammes (126 lbs). No apprentice claims are allowed in the Oaks.
Puddy Pooh – owned, trained and bred by Richard Azan – is the prohibitive favourite for the 10-furlong event which sees trainer Gary Subratie with the most entered runners: Commanding Aviator, Dream Come True and Gypsy Flash. Leading jockey Omar Walker will continue his partnership with Puddy Pooh in the Oaks.
Notable entries are Berranca trained by Anthony Nunes and Mom’s Student conditioned by Fitzroy Glispie who won last year’s renewal with Raeven Renae (Shane Ellis). Raeven Renae was sold after the Oaks and is now racing in Trinidad and Tobago.
After finishing third in the 1,000 Guineas some 10 lengths behind Puddy Pooh, Berranca will have a change in riders as Ellis has secured the mount in the Oaks taking over the reins from Dane Nelson.
Mom’s Student ran her heart out in the 1,000 Guineas to finish second. It is generally considered that she prefers to sprint, thereby making the 10 furlongs of the Oaks a daunting task. Trainer Glispie has also entered Vintage Ruckus in the event.
