MBU tackle Humble Lion Sunday
TUCKER, St James — Fresh from qualifying for the semi-finals of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championships, defending champions, Montego Bay United will resume their quest for a place in the semi-finals of the Red Stripe Premier League when they take on Humble Lion at Wespow Park on Sunday, starting at 3:30pm.
The competition will resume after a two-week break to allow for Montego Bay United and Waterhouse to participate in the CFU Championships League.
Waterhouse however, withdrew at the last minute, citing “internal issues.”
Montego Bay United are on 52 points and virtually assured of a place in the top four to join leaders Arnett Gardens — 63 points and Waterhouse — 54 points, with Humble Lion — 49 points and Harbour View — also battling for a spot.
Humble Lion are battling for their first semi-final spot and coach Donovan Duckie will return to Wespow Park for the first time since he left MBU mid-way the second round last season.
The teams have split both games played so far, Montego Bay United won 2-0 at home- before Duckie joined the Clarendon outfit — then lost 1-0 in the second round game.
Montego Bay United were beaten in the last Premier League outing, 2-1 to Cavalier, a day before coach Carlos Garcia was relieved of his duties.
Dean Weatherly, who led them to the title last year, is in charge again and led them to three wins in Haiti in the CFU tournament, outscoring their opponents 8-1 and qualifying for the semi-final stages that will be held a month from now.
The CFU games would have given Montego Bay United some confidence as a number of players who had lost some form, got goals, including Allan Ottey, Jermaine Woozencroft, Ronaldo Rodney and Omar Gordon.
Fabian McCarthy scored in the first two games and was the only player to get more than one goal for Montego Bay United in the week- long tournament.
