T Swift on top
One of the most anticipated awards show for the year took place on Sunday (May 17) in Las Vegas. Among other highlights, the Billboard Music Awards saw Taylor Swift making history. Taylor won eight awards adding to the twelve she has collected over the years, putting her past Garth Brooks’ 19-win record. No one can argue against the record-breaking achievements of ‘Tay Tay’. Aside from her historic wins, as a show opener she premiered the video for her latest single Bad Blood. The video had a star-studded cast and a surprise verse from Kendrick Lamar.
Kanye West or Dr Kanye West’s Billboard Music Awards experience wasn’t as thrilling as Swift’s. After an introduction from his sister-in-law Kylie Jenner, he took the stage performing Black Skinhead and All Day. Members of the Las Vegas audience were unable to hear portions of his performance and West was booed.
Sam Smith’s charm permeated the audience in Las Vegas, and also those who were watching live. He accepted his awards via live video. Recovering from vocal cord surgery, Smith was unable to be present at the show.
Nicki Minaj’s performance was filled with more dancing than singing/ rapping. She performed The Night is Still Young and Hey Mama.
The ‘aww’ moment of the night had to be Chris Brown’s entrance on to the red carpet with his daughter Royalty.
As a result of the recent departure of Zayn Malik from the popular group One Direction, Liam Payne made it his point of duty to give him credit for work done with the group. When the group went to collect their first award for the night, in wrapping up the first acceptance speech he said, “There’s one more person to share this with and that’s our brother Zayn.”
Joining One Direction as talents to walk away with multiple awards were Hozier, Pharrell, Sam Smith, Iggy Azaela and John Legend, who all won at least two awards.
