1st Test: Windies slump to nine-wicket defeat
ROSEAU, Dominica (CMC) – West Indies slumped to a disappointing nine-wicket defeat inside three days in the first Test at Windsor Park, to concede a 1-0 lead to Australia in the two-match series here Friday.
Resuming the day on 25 for two in their second innings, West Indies wasted a 144-run fourth wicket stand between top-scorer Marlon Samuels and debutant Shane Dowrich, to crash to 216 all out.
Rollicking along at 181 for three, the Caribbean side appeared in control but they suffered a now typical collapse to lose their last seven wickets for 35 runs.
Left-arm seamer Mitchell Starc captured four for 28 while pacer Josh Hazlewood (2-17), left-armer Mitchell Johnson (2-38) and off-spinner Nathan Lyon (2-67) picked up two wickets apiece.
Set a meagre 47 for victory, Australia raced to their target off just five overs, with David Warner slamming 28 off a mere 20 balls, with three fours and two sixes.
When Samuels and Dowrich were stroking half-centuries earlier, West Indies seemed set to put up a challenge and take the game into at least the penultimate day on Saturday.
The right-hander hit 74 while Dowrich stroked 70 but they were the only two to pass 15 and two of four in double figures.
