Vengeful UWI host York in Premier League hunt
University of the West Indies (UWI), buoyed by their 6-0 defeat of Savannah SC in the previous round, will be out for vengeance when they host York United this afternoon at the Mona Bowl in the Jamaica Football Federation All-Island Confederation Play-offs.
In the other encounter, home team Savannah will be anxious to haul themselves back into contention when they take on former Premier League kingpins Portmore United at Frome Sports Complex in Westmoreland.
Kick-off in both games is scheduled for 3:30.
UWI, the flag bearers for Kingston & St Andrew Football Association, have four points from three games after recording a win, a loss and draw so far. They started out by losing 1-3 at York Complex in St Thomas, but a draw versus favourites Portmore and Sunday’s hammering of Savannah appears to have turned the tide.
York are also on four points. The Eastern Confed champions began well with victory over UWI, but a draw away to Savannah and a narrow loss at home to Portmore have slowed their progress.
Portmore, the South Central Confederation winners and five-time champions of the Premier League, are seeking a hasty return to the nation’s top flight after being unceremoniously demoted a season ago.
They have seven points after wins over Savannah and York, respectively, and a draw versus the university contingent. A win today could ensure Portmore’s promotion.
But Western Confed winners Savannah, who have only a point, have a tendency to pose a formidable challenge on their home turf.
The All-Island Confederation Play-offs comprise home-and-away match-ups. The top two teams will win progression to the 2015-16 Premier League competition
