Blake, Forbes crowned 100m junior champions

CALABAR High’s Xandre Blake and Sashalee Forbes of Holmwood Technical High were crowned junior 100m champions on a day when poor entries forced the cancellation of the long distances races at the Supreme Ventures Junior Championship at the National Stadium yesterday.

The Boys Under-20 1,500m with two entries; Boys’ Under-18 3000m with two entries, along with the girls Under-20 3,000m with one entry were all cancelled.

But there were some other events with just two runners that went along, for example the Under-20 Girls’ 400m hurdles won by Jonel Lacey (1:01.57) of Holmwood Technical ahead of Shannon Kalawan (1:03.34). The Under-20 Boys’ 400m hurdles had three runners and was won by Marvin Williams in 51.80 seconds.

The Under-18 Girls’ 400m hurdles had two participants and was easily won by Junelle Broomfield of St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) in 59.94 seconds.

In fact, most of the girls field events, had three or less competitors. In the Under-18 and Under-20 Triple Jumps, there were two competitors. Three girls’ turned up for the discus Under-20, and four for the Under-18 discus.

But, on a brighter note, the 100m blue-ribbon events gave the small gathering something to cheer about as in the Under-20 100m, Blake stormed to a decent 10.46 seconds, holding off Shivnarine Smalling of Kingston College in 10.59, with Hujaye Cornwall third in 10.67 running into a headwind of -1.7 mps.

Calabar’s Xavior Angus won the Under-18 wquivalent in 10.79 seconds ahead of Andre Morrison of St Jago High in 10.88, and St Catherine High’s Ashanie Smith with 10.95 seconds.

Kimone Shaw of St Jago High looked awesome in capturing the Under-18 100m in 11.81 seconds, pulling away from Vanesha Pusey of Green Island in 11.97 and the fading Shellece Clark of Edwin Allen in 11.99 seconds.

Holmwood Technical’s Sashalee Forbes took the Under-20 equivalent in 11.71 seconds ahead of her schoolmate Ashley Williams in 11.86 seconds. Third went to Kimone Hines of Green Island with 12.06 seconds.

Meanwhile, O’Brian Wasome of Jamaica College easily won the Under -20 long jump with a leap of 7.46m ahead of Odaine Lewis of Cornwall College with 7.35m. Ajani James of JC was third with 7.20m.

Jessica Noble of Utech won the women’s Under-20 long jump with 6.02m ahead of Shanice Lewis of Edwin Allen with 5.99m. St Andrew Technical High School’s Ayesha Champagnie was third with 5.73m.

Edwin Allen’s Annia Ashley captured the Under-18 high jump clearing the bar at 1.68m. Shain Salmon of Hydel High was second with 1.65m, ahead of third-placed Janieve Burgher of Edwin Allen also with 1.65m.

Devia Brown of Hydel took the Girls’ Under-18 discus with a throw of 41.64m ahead of Shyledeen Smith of Petersfield High with 39.85m.

Calabar’s Najair Jackson threw 62.79m to win the Under-20 javelin ahead of his teammate Adrian Mitchell with 61.79m. Orlando Stephenson of Bog Walk High was third some distance back with 53.62m.

The Junior Championship continues today at 9:00 am and is set to conclude at 4:30 pm.
