Retaining the Senior Cup shows dominance — skipper Grey
Damion Grey, the captain of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) cricket team, says winning the 2015 two-day Senior Cup title brings an even sweeter feeling than last season because the second victory is solid evidence of their dominance in the local club competition.
The Up Park Camp-based contingent lifted the crown after taking first innings honours against St Catherine CC in the drawn encounter at Sabina Park on Saturday and Sunday.
Before last season’s success, JDF had previously won the Senior Cup in 2003.
“This year is sweeter because last year was after a drought period (of not winning). This year we confirmed our dominance, so it felt much better. Before the season, we were talking about it that we were saying we were supposed to win this again and we really proved we can do it,” Grey told the Jamaica Observer.
According to Grey, who has gone five seasons as JDF captain, retaining the title also provides a boost to the army fraternity.
“The guys are seen as ambassadors of the Force, so it has had a great impact on the team and the Force itself.”
He said an emphasis on discipline — something not always as rigid as it ought to be — was a difference-maker.
“I guess it’s really hard work and dedication over the past couple of seasons because we realised we lacked certain things in the past where discipline was concerned.
“It was some real determination and hard work from us and we used soldiering aspects. We decided we are going to be tough and play real hard right through. The discipline caused the real impact and we gelled together as a unit; we have fun together and we play hard together,” Grey explained.
The JDF skipper noted that top-order batsman Joseph Palmer scored over 600 runs to lead the team’s batting. Palmer also chipped in with a number of useful wickets off his off-spin bowling.
Leighton Leslie, the medium pace bowler, also came in for special mention after ending with 28 wickets. Leslie, batting low down the order, also compiled over 300 runs.
But Grey insisted it was a true team effort.
“It’s a good all-round team because we scored over 300 runs a few times this season, and we have been bowling out teams for a little over 200 runs. The players, staff and supporters all contributed,” he said.
And already, attention turns to 2016 where they will be gunning for a third straight triumph.
“We are definitely looking toward (winning) it (again) and we are planning for the next season already,” Grey stated in an ominous tone.
