KINGSTON, Jamaica – Detectives from the Counter-Terrorism and Organized Crime Investigations Branch (C-TOC) are once again reminding lawyers to be cautious of people calling them and purporting to be police officers, advising them that their names appear on a list that are being investigated by the squad.

The police say these callers are informing attorneys-at-law that the cases being investigated are in relation to land transactions and other matters involving large sums of money.

“These unscrupulous persons are suggesting that they can assist the attorneys-at-law by making the investigations disappear,” a release from the police’s Corporate Communications Unit said Thursday. “This is an attempt at scamming or an act of extortion.”

The police moved to advise members of the legal profession and the public that these phone calls do not originate from the C-TOC Branch, and that the police are in no way associated with this attempted scam or extortion.

“We are encouraging all attorneys-at-law who have been affected by this corrupt act, to immediately report it to the Counter-Terrorism and Organized Crime Investigations Branch (C-TOC) at 967-5627, police 119 emergency number or the nearest police station,” the release continued.
