Ja win two silver on day two of University Games
Jamaican athletes picked up two silver medals in the men’s and women’s 100m on Wednesday’s second day of track and field at the World University Games being held in Gwangju, South Korea.
Kemarley Brown and Shimyra Williams, both of the University of Technology, were second in their respective finals as Jamaica was 10th on the track and field medal count after two days.
Brown, the former Green Island High and St Elizabeth Technical runner, clocked 10.12 seconds (0.0m/s) for second behind South Africa’s Akani Simbine, who set a Games Record 9.97 seconds to win the gold medal, while Rami Guliyev of Turkey was third in 10.16 seconds.
Earlier in the semi-finals, Brown had run 10.19 seconds for second place in his heat.
Williams clocked 11.46s (0.4m/s) for her silver medal as GC Foster’s Kedisha Dallas placed fifth in 11.49 seconds.
Viktoriya Zyabkina of Kazakhstan took the gold in 11.23 seconds, while Russia’s Elena Kozlova won the bronze in 11.47 seconds.
Both Williams and Dallas had won their semi-final races. Williams ran 11.42 seconds and Dallas clocked 11.47 seconds.
Both women also advanced in the 200m after the first rounds races were run earlier in the day. Williams won her race in 24.18 seconds, while Dallas was second in her heat in 24.06 seconds.
Meanwhile, sprint hurdler Danielle Williams and middle distance runner Simoya Campbell both advanced to their respective finals.
Williams, who won back-to-back National Senior titles recently and is on her way to the World Championships, is the fastest qualifier in the 100m hurdles after winning her semi-final heat in 13.08 seconds.
Campbell, who has also qualified for the World Championships, also advanced easily to the final of the 800m, placing second in her semi-finals in 2 minutes 3.10 seconds.
Tovea Jenkins failed to get past the second round of the women’s 400m after she placed fifth in the semi-finals in 53.43 seconds in her semi-finals.
Fitzroy Dunkley did not show up for the semis of the men’s 400m.
