Atkinson targets 100m breaststroke at Pan-Am Games
ALIA Atkinson’s quest for a medal at the Pan-American Games in Toronto, Canada continues today when she competes in the 100m breaststroke, one of her better disciplines, at the CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and Field House.
After coming up just short in the 200m breaststroke on Wednesday night, placing fourth in the final, hopes will be high that Atkinson, the joint world record holder and gold medallist in the 100m breaststroke at the short course World Championships last December, will win her second Pan-American Games medal.
Timothy Wynter in the men’s 100m backstroke and Trudian Patrick in the women’s 50m freestyle will also be in action as they seek a place in this evening’s finals.
Yesterday, Patrick placed sixth in her heat of the 100m butterfly in 1minute 04.43 seconds and was the second alternate for last night’s B final.
Also today, Dwayne Ford will compete in the men’s 50m prone rifle shooting event at the Pan-Am Shooting Centre, the same event where he won the 2014 West Indies target rifle championships.
Meanwhile, Ian Facey will hope for an improved second day of golf at the Angus Glen Golf Club after shooting a five over par 77 in yesterday’s first round of the men’s individual stroke play event and finished joint 21st of the 36 golfers in the field.
The 21 year-old Lyn got off to a bad start and shot a six over par 42 on the front nine but improved on the back nine where he shot one under par 35.
He had two birdies, on the par five ninth and the par three 17th and played almost perfect golf for the second- half yesterday.
His start was not so good, however, as he had three bogies and two double bogies and was seven over par after eight holes.
He will hope to continue his improvement in today’s second round if he hopes to move closer to the leaders.
Argentina’s Alejandro Tosti is the first-round leader with a seven under par 65 including six birdies and an eagle that came on the par three seventh hole.
Marcello Rozo of Colombia is second on four under 68, while Felipe Aguilar Chile is third on three under 69.
