Bon voyage, High Commissioner Ready
Foreign Minister Senator A J Nicholson last Tuesday hosted a farewell luncheon for the High Commissioner of Canada to Jamaica, Robert Ready at the Courtleigh Hotel in New Kingston. Minister Nicholson (left) presented High Commissioner Ready with a plaque of appreciation and thanked him for his role in aiding the expansion of the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Programme to include greenhouse farming, sea-food harvesting and new industries and sectors such as hospitality, automotive and medical/health, with the latter focusing on the Licensed Practical Nursing Programme. Since 1967, five years after official establishment of diplomatic relations between both countries, some 6,000 Jamaican workers have been employed on farms in Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and British Columbia. High Commissioner Ready leaves Jamaica at the end of August following a three year tour of duty.
