Taylor Faces Swift Backlash
After about a week of built anticipation and a sprinkle of hints, Taylor Swift’s music video to accompany her latest single Wildest Dreams, finally landed on Sunday night during the MTV VMAs.
And fans “still can’t even, ugh, just can’t”. They can’t understand how she managed to sneak away from super sleuthing Swifties and the public eye to shoot the video without one word leaking to the press.
Even wilder than the video though, is the social media uproar over the fact that no blacks are featured in the video which was shot in Africa. Social media users have criticised the colonial era Africa setting, saying that there ‘is nothing romantic or beautiful about the colonial era’.
Nevertheless enduring fans have pointed to a similar rumours of racist undertones which surfaced last year in August when Taylor debuted her Shake It Off music video, though that one had actually featured people of colour. And since that mini social media storm blew over within days fans perhaps can rest assured this one will most likely follow suit.
However, one user called it a ‘colonialist’s wet dream’, an Africa with animals, beautiful scenery and no black people.
Fans hit back with: Should we really consider a music video as a sound basis in determining if someone’s racist or not?
Anyhow, check it out and let us know what you think. The video is available on Swift’s YouTube Vevo page, and has almost 15 million views already. Proceeds go towards wild life protection efforts in Africa.
The Joseph Kahn directed video is rightly described in its opener as a ‘film’ as it takes viewers on an interesting journey, experiencing a love story that occurred a lifetime ago. For the video Swift dons a dark wig and pretends to be an old starlet that has a love affair with her attractive co-star (Scott Eastwood), complete with wild animals and planes swooping over savannahs.
