KINGSTON, Jamaica (JIS) – Member of Parliament for North West St Ann, Dr Dayton Campbell, is suggesting that a way should be found to allow very low income earners to benefit from a loan from the National Housing Trust.

“We have in the constituency a list of 300 persons who are waiting to obtain the Food for the Poor unit. We can’t respond to this, because we only get 20 per year,” Campbell said.

He was making his contribution to the State of the Constituency Debate in the House of Representatives, on Tuesday.

Campbell suggested that if Food For the Poor units are constructed at a cost of US$6,000 (J$700,000) each, those persons who earn at the lower end could be facilitated to get that loan and have Food for the Poor come in and build that two bedroom unit, so that they can have a shelter above their heads.

“These persons have been contributing and the fact is, the majority of them could gain access to land and they could be able to pay that mortgage to get that two bedroom unit from Food for the Poor,” he pointed out.
