Pear Tree River main road closed to facilitate bridge construction
ST THOMAS, Jamaica –The National Works Agency (NWA) is advising motorists and pedestrians that the roadway leading to the Pear Tree River community in St Thomas, will be closed for six months as of tomorrow, September 17.
This closure of the roadway is to facilitate the demolition of the old bridge and the start of construction of the new structure. The new bridge will be approximately 30 metres in length and span two abutments. It will be constructed in the location of the existing bridge alignment. The demolished old bridge will be carted as scrap and disposed of at an approved waste management site, the NWA said Wednesday.
A detour road has been constructed adjacent to the bridge construction site to allow for the movement of traffic and pedestrians during the temporary closure of the roadway.
Construction works commenced in early September. The $49.5 million contract was awarded to Alcar Construction and Haulage Company Limited.
The NWA is also advising motorists and pedestrians to obey all posted warning signs and the instructions of flag persons during the construction works.
