When did you start your career as a jockey?

From I was young boy growing up, I loved horses and horse racing in general. I would come to the racetrack in the mornings and watch the horses exercise and it looked amazing. I eventually developed a very special liking for the sport and it was no surprise to me when I became a jockey. My career started back in 2009 and my love for horses and racing still continues to this day.

Which horse was your first winner?

I won my first race aboard Topless Angel for trainer Barry Dawes going over seven furlongs. It felt good, exciting, amazing, you name it. I was really happy that day. I can still fondly remember that day when I won with Topless Angel; such is what winning your first race does to you, and it is an unforgettable moment.

Which horse was your longest odds winner?

Red Thomas at odds of 29-1. I am always happy to win races, whether it is on a favourite or an ‘outer’. Red Thomas was running some good races prior to the win, so I was really confident that he would run another good race, but it was wonderful to have won. So for me the odds don’t matter, in racing it is about winning.

Which is the best horse that you have ridden?

The best horse that I have ridden was Saint Cecelia. She was an outstanding racehorse and she was fast as well. I won with her going over 1,000 metres straight and she was just super, stopping the clock in 56:2 or 56:4 seconds. I was motionless in the saddle that day as I really had nothing to do but keep a straight course, which I did. By far the best horse I have ever mounted, the great St Cecelia.

Which is the best horse that you have seen race at Caymanas Park?

Well, I have heard about some good horses but I have never actually seen these great horses race, like Legal Light for example, who everyone says is one of the best ever. Legal Light might well be one of the best, but the best I have seen with my own eyes is Saint Cecelia. Saint Cecelia was a champion; she holds the record of most consecutive victories, which is 14, she won the 1,000 Guineas, the Jamaica Oaks, and Gold Cup. She has also even won four consecutive Caribbean Sprint Championships. In my book, Saint Cecelia was a true champion and by far the best horse I have seen race at Caymanas Park.

Who influenced your career the most?

My mother, Elecia Kelly, stepfather Byron Kelly, other family members and friends, all played a part in my development. There are always others too, sometimes too many to mention, so I say thanks to all.
