The long awaited UEFA Champions League kicked off Tuesday and already there have been oohs, ahhs and major upsets.

The curse that follows Premier League teams followed them to matchday one as Manchester City and Manchester United failed to acquire the precious three points, losing 2-1 to PSV and Juventus respectively . Manchester City, despite sitting comfortably at the top of the Premier League table, could not find a way past last season’s finalists. Manchester United’s right back Luke Shaw suffered a double leg fracture and will inevitably be out of play for a while. The Red Devils were infuriated even further as the perpetrator was named UEFA Man of the Match.  Arguably the most disappointing loss for EPL fans was 10-man Arsenal losing 2-1 to Dinamo Zagreb, a match they were favoured to win. Chelsea, on the other hand opened their Champions League campaign with a bang, beating Maccabi Tei Aviv 4-0. While Hazard still struggles to find the net the Blues strung together decent passes and seemed to have patched up the holes previously exposed in their defense.

Even though Hazard’s wayward penalty left a bitter taste at Stamford Bridge, 19-year-old Ruben Loftus-Cheek, even without a goal or an assist, dazzled the fans and made his presence known on the pitch.

The defending champions Barcelona came short of the three points as they drew with Roma 1-1. Luis Suarez found the net first but Alessandro Florenzi from Roma netted an unbelievable goal from the midfield. Los Blancos walked away with a 4-1 victory over Shaktar Donsk securing their three points. Cristiano Ronaldo contributed by producing his second hattrick in three days and securing his title as Real Madrid’s and Champions League top goal scorer.
