Former chief minister says sex charges against him false
BRADES, Montserrat (CMC) — Former Chief Minister David S Brandt has described as “totally false” two sexually related charges laid against him by the police on Monday.
Brandt, a prominent lawyer, who served as chief minister of this British overseas territory from 1997-2001, was released on EC$20,000 bail. He is due to return to court on December 7.
He has been charged with having unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 16 years and conspiring to have unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 16 years.
The allegations date back to 2010.
Speaking on the state-owned ZJB radio on Monday night, Brandt said, “I am not guilty and in the fullness of time it will be shown that I am not guilty.
“I can’t comment anymore on anything. They arrested me on suspicion on (last) Friday morning. They questioned me on Friday night and they kept me until this (Monday) morning without ever asking me any other question or anything like that”.
Brandt told the radio station that the “law says that you have to charge me…so they took me before the court, but I am not guilty of anything”.
Brandt also repeated his innocence when he told the online publication mnialive.com that “I am not guilty of these charges.
“My day in court will show that is the case, and that I am innocent. These allegations that have been brought against me are totally false”.
As part of his conditions for bail, Brandt, in his late 60s, is restricted from making any contact with any of the witnesses in the case either in person, or through any of his servants or agents.
Meanwhile, the Royal Montserrat Police Service has denied media reports that law enforcement officials from Britain’s Scotland Yard are assisting the investigations.
But they confirmed that two officials from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service are part of a multi-jurisdictional investigative team probing the allegations.
