Law enforcement, security personnel get US training
THE United States Embassy’s Regional Security office in Kingston last week completed another in a series of training for Jamaica’s law enforcement and security personnel.
The five-day course saw participants receiving training in the principles and processes used to lead investigations of terrorist incidents, which should better equip them to protect public safety and successfully resolve investigations. The training also included strategies for developing standardised operational procedures for anti-terrorism investigations, as well as broader principles for recruiting, selecting, and training personnel.
US Ambassador to Jamaica Luis G Moreno, in his remarks at the graduation, thanked the participants for their dedicated efforts in serving and protecting the people of Jamaica, as he stressed the importance of the two nations working together closely in security and law enforcement matters to counter threats against both countries.
An embassy release said this phase of the training included members of the Jamaica Defence Force, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Airport Operations Management team at Sangster International Airport, and the Ministry of National Security.
“The course was very informative and provided relevant insight on areas of concern as a prosecutor in terms of terrorism. It also reinforced our knowledge of the management functions required to prepare law enforcement investigative personnel to conduct investigations of terrorist incidents,” said Suzette Whittingham-Maxwell, prosecutor at the Office of the DPP.
Earlier this month, US$10,000 worth of first-responder medical bags and training kits were handed over by the embassy to the Jamaica Fire Brigade.
The United States said it remains committed to provide key assistance to Jamaica to help counter violent crime and transnational criminal activity.
“Our bilateral security partnership focuses on reducing corruption; increasing transparency and good governance, and fostering Jamaican participation in regional efforts,” the US ambassador said.
