Classics bloom in the ‘Gardens’
RAINS couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm for Jamaica’s vintage vehicles as the Jamaica Classic Car Club (JCCC) held their monthly meet at Hope Gardens in St Andrew, two Sundays ago.
“Despite the weather, we had 22 cars in attendance,” said Shane Angus, JCCC president.
The heavens opened for a short while casting the 2:00 pm start in doubt. But by late afternoon, club members and classic car aficionados took advantage of the cooler temperatures to turn on. Seemingly in defiance to the inclement weather, several convertibles were in attendance and drew plenty of attention.
The first was the 1963 MG MGB of Brian Madden, which lay claim to be being the oldest of its kind in the island. The second attention-getters were a pair of female-owned MG Midgets.
“I just love classic cars,” Gillian Whylie, one of the owners said.
Whylie has owned her white 1977 MG Midget for two years having purchased it in the UK.
“I imported it to Jamaica over a year ago,” she said.
She said she was drawn to the MG Midget due to its exciting driving dynamics.
“It looks small, but its very fast with its 1500cc engine,” she explained.
Her love of the car, and classics in general, means she will be maintaining the car in its original condition as best as possible as long as it’s under her ownership.
