Out to shake the ‘Blues’
ST George’s College (STGC) will be seeking to resume winning ways when they host Eltham High at Winchester Park in one of nine ISSA/Flow Manning Cup games today.
All games are scheduled to begin at 3:30 pm.
In the other Group C games today, Innswood will visit Denham Town at Edward Seaga Sports Complex, while Kingston Technical High will host Ardenne.
The Neville Bell-coached St George’s outfit kicked off their campaign with three consecutive wins, including a comprehensive 9-0 win over Kingston Technical, before coming up short in a 1-2 loss to Innswood in their last game.
The ‘Light Blues’ are currently in second place on nine points, and have rattled in 14 goals without conceding prior to their recent defeat to Innswood, and are heavily favoured to rebound and press on in their campaign.
Eltham secured their first victory of the season with a comfortable 4-0 beating of Kingston Technical which has left them in fifth position on three points. The St Catherine-based unit will be optimistic of a repeat of that performance, but will find it extremely difficult against a well-rounded St George’s team who is out for blood.
Leaders Innswood High, on 12 points, will be in an interesting battle away to third-placed Denham Town (seven points), but could maintain their three-point lead on their current vein of form, while fourth-placed Ardenne (four points) should secure win number two against the pointless Kingston Technical.
Meanwhile, Group F leader Jonathan Grant, with maximum 12 points, will visit second-placed Vauxhall (10 points) for what is expected to be a thrilling top-of-the-table clash, as both teams seek to keep their unbeaten record intact.
Former champions Excelsior High will be aiming to rebound from their 0-1 defeat to Jonathan Grant when they host fifth-placed Spanish Town (three points) at their new home pitch at Stadium East field. The Mountain View-based team is currently in third place on six points, two ahead of fourth-placed Norman Manley who could go one better playing away to cellar dweller Ascot High without a point.
In Group B, leaders Hydel High (10 points) will visit Olympic Gardens for another interesting clash, this time against the much improved Haile Selassie unit (seven points). Hydel, the 2012 finalist, are currently hunting a fourth-consecutive victory and will be confident of accomplishing the feat, following a recent 5-1 drubbing of Cumberland.
The Payne Avenue-based Haile Selassie are hoping to maintain a level of consistency as they seek to repeat their historic second-round berth last year, and the scalp of Hydel would be a much needed boost for the young team going forward.
Previous leaders Dunoon Technical have slipped third on seven points with an inferior goal difference, but should worm their way back up the standings when they visit the hapless Cumberland who are yet to gain a point.
Fourth-placed Greater Portmore (five points) and fifth-placed Papine (four points) should be an intriguing contest with both teams still in with a chance of getting into contention for a second-round berth.
However, Greater Portmore is favoured to come away with all three points on back form, despite Papine having the home court advantage.
