‘Perfect’ gift for Nicky B
SINGER Nicky B’s biggest success as a songwriter has come with Bust It which is featured on the soundtrack of the hit film, The Perfect Guy.
Bust it, recorded by Sean Paul, is among 10 tracks on the soundtrack which is also driven by Welcome to Jamaica, Damian ‘Junior Gong’ Marley’s 2005 hit.
The Perfect Guy opened at number one at the United States box office two weeks ago with over US$31 million dollars in ticket sales. It stars Sanaa Lathan, Michael Ealy, Morris Chestnut and Tess Harper.
Nicky B (real name Nicholas Bennett) co-wrote Bust It with Sean Paul, Allan Grigg, James Abrahart and Marty James. He said he was surprised when he heard it made the film’s soundtrack.
“To be honest I really didn’t know. I just got the call from Sean’s lawyer advising me that the song made it in the movie. I feel really good about this because any opportunity that
us as musicians, whether songwriters or artistes, get to showcase our talent and be heard by millions of people, is also a great thing for reggae music,” he told Splash.
Bust It was written eight months ago during a songwriting session in Los Angeles.
Nicky B is the son of veteran music producer and songwriter Mikey Bennett, who had success on the American pop charts in the 1990s with songs like House Call by Shabba Ranks and Maxi Priest.
The younger Bennett made his recording debut 13 years ago working with well-known producers including Patrick ‘Roach’ Samuels, Don Corleon and H2O Productions.
His best-known songs include Swarm Me, a remake of If It Isn’t Love featuring Sean Paul, Like This Before (with deejay Shifta) and Mad Me (with Ce’Cile).
Nicky B has co-written songs with US Virgin Islands duo Rock City and Andre Merritt. He wrote See Her Again for Hawaiian reggae artiste J Boog.
Bennett had some success in France nine years ago when he teamed with French artistes Lord Kossity, Rohff and Atep. Their single, Hotel Room, featuring Lord Kossity, reached number three on the French national chart.
Exposure from those collaborations led to a recording contract with independent label Feelin Records, which is distributed through Universal Music.
Universal Japan released Nicky B’s debut album, Under Caribbean Skies, in 2013.
“I have just been working a lot behind the scenes writing for other artistes. I have been travelling with Sean Paul working on his upcoming project as well as my own project. My new single Like a Rose written by me and Sam Hook, is about to be released,” he said.
