MARTHA BRAE, Trelawny — Former champions Cornwall College made a winning start to the ISSA Western Conference basketball competition after beating William Knibb Memorial in both games, the Under-16 and Under-19, at Martha Brae on Friday.

Cornwall College had a big 92-20 victory in the Under-16 game, while the Under-19, contest was closer with the Montego Bay school winning 61-56.

Holland High who got points from William Knibb after the latter had used two ineligible players in their game, lead the Under-16 section with five points, defending champions Herbert Morrison are next on four, Muschett High and Cornwall are on two points each, with William Knibb on one.

Herbert Morrison and Cornwall are tied on two points each in the Under-19 section with Muschett High and William Knibb on one point each.

Cornwall got off to a fast start in the Under-16 game and were ahead by double digits after the first quarter score 20-3, improved to 45-5 at half-time and were well clear 62-18 after the third period.

Leacroft Lettman had a game-high 29 points and seven assists for Cornwall, and Jowayne Jones scored 14 points, while Ojay Marshall scored 12 points.

Tajae White had 11 of the hosts’ 20 points.

In the Under-19 contest, despite a game-high 37 points and 22 rebounds from Errol Steele, William Knibb came up short, even with a big fourth-quarter run.

Cornwall College led 15-12, 33-23 and 46-30 at the intervals, but were outscored 26-15 in the fourth quarter.

National Under-19 cricketer Leonardo Fridgenette led Cornwall College with 27 points, 10 rebounds, two blocked shots and three steals, while Antonio Spence had 15 points, nine rebounds, four steals, three blocks and three assists.

Earlier in the week, Herbert Morrison swept both games against Muschett, winning the Under-16 game 47-23 and the Under-19 game 50-26.

In the Under-16 game, Muschett failed to get more than nine points in any quarter against a tough Herbert Morrison defence, with Shaqueal Benti leading the way with a double-double 22 points and 10 rebounds and seven steals.

Rhyeem Barrett also scored seven points and had 10 rebounds for Herbert Morrison, while Akeem Baker led Muschett with 11 points.

In the Under-19 game, Tafari Vassell scored 14 points and had 26 rebounds for Herbert Morrison, while Brendan Dawkins scored 10 points.

Jermaine Allwood had 15 points for Muschett and Damaine Thorpe scored nine points.
