Tropical Storm Kate could become hurricane as it moves away from the Bahamas
MIAMI, Florida (AP) — Tropical Storm Kate is moving quickly away from the Bahamas.
The storm’s maximum sustained winds early Tuesday are near 60 mph (95 kph). The US National Hurricane Center says some strengthening is forecast and Kate could become a hurricane by Wednesday.
As of 4 am EST, the storm was centred about 280 miles (450 kilometres) north-northeast of the northwestern Bahamas and is moving north near 17 mph (28 kph).
The Met Service of Jamaica says Kate is not a threat to Jamaica.
