MVP Grassroots Athletics Clinic comes to a close
THE staging of another series of the Digicel MVP Grassroot Athletics Clinic came to a successful close last Saturday at the GC Foster Sport College in S Catherine.
The training clinic has been itinerant to various sections of the island for the past couple of months, recruiting and training young aspiring athletes and coaches in the disciplines of track and field comprising sprinting drills, distance running, throwing, hurdles, relays and jumps.
At each stop, groups of student athletes and coaches turned out eager to learn all they could about the sport.
Top athletes and coaches of each training clinic were awarded with prizes donated by sponsors Digicel, Nike, Gatorade, Reggae Jamming Foods, and National Commercial Bank; the ultimate prize being a $1 million scholarship to attend the University of Technology which will be awarded to one top athlete preceding the training clinic.
Sponsors of the event ensured they were on hand at each camp to lend support where necessary, whether with gears, meals or refreshments. Hydration partner Gatorade provided the necessary hydration needed for the series.
Mitchell Watson, marketing manager at Pepsi Cola Jamaican said he was happy with the tremendous success of the clinic.
“Gatorade has made it a priority to be a part of this initative because it provides lifelong developmental guidance to Jamaica’s future athletic stars and their coaches. The brand is always supportive of the growth of sport and youth development,” Watson said.
