What Goes Around hits Blu-Ray
ROUGHLY eight years after its US release, low-budget, Jamaica-inspired movie What Goes Around was released on Blu Ray and DVD last week.
Filmed in Miami and New York City, the film stars Nohard Grant, Flippa Maffia, Sakina Samuda, Kim Goss, Dayne McDonald, Kashna Clarke, Tashika Carpenter, Ras Atiba, Vivienne Bent and Michael Bridges.
Directed by Steve McAlpin, the cast includes dancehall acts Mavado and Ding Dong.
Producer of What Goes Around, John Black spoke to the Jamaica Observer about the movie. He said it’s not all about the violence and shoot-outs often associated with Jamaican-themed films. But rather, a twisted tale about relationships.
“It is layered with engaging drama that follows the roller coaster ride of Denzel and his brother, Sylvester, who lead different lifestyles,” he said.
Explaining the plot further, Black said Sylvester is a playboy while his brother is quite the opposite. However, after visiting the doctor for a check-up, they learned that one of them has an STD while the other is HIV-positive.
“It is about cheating and back-stabbing and the danger one can put their lives and others in because of infidelity,” the producer added.
Black said the 2008 film had a budget of US$150,000.
“We got assistance from family members but most of the movie funding came from our salary. Many will wonder why we took so long to get it on DVD but we were trying to get the right company to distribute it as it is really a good movie,” he said.
What Goes Around has been shown at several film festivals in Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Brooklyn. It is currently distributed by Island Entertainment.
