Jones focuses on promotion drive as contract speculation swirls
CARDIFF CITY, Wales (CMC) — Cardiff City’s Trinidadian striker Kenwyne Jones says he is solely focused on trying to help the Welsh side’s promotion from the Championship after scoring a double on Tuesday as they beat Brentford 3-2 at home.
Jones has been locked in contract talks with the club, with media reports this week indicating that he would be asked to take a pay cut in order to remain on the roster when his current deal runs out next summer.
However, the Trinidad and Tobago captain said his aim at the moment was securing Premiership football for the club next season.
“Right now club promotion is everyone’s primary focus. I’m really just enjoying my time here at Cardiff with Russell Slade (manager) and the lads,” said the 31-year-old former Stoke City and Sunderland frontman.
“The fans continue to be fantastic and, of course, that support drives the team to want to finish well.”
Jones’ five goals this term has been vital as Cardiff have moved to seventh in the Championship table, just one spot outside the play-off places.
None of his goals were as important, however, as his strike in the third minute of stoppage time at the end on Tuesday after Cardiff had blown a 2-0 lead after 34 minutes, allowing Brentford to level the scores in the 86th minute.
“In the second-half Brentford came out with a vengeance and we needed to hold the fort when it mattered most,” Jones explained.
“They applied the pressure but the boys never lost faith. Fabio presented an excellent opportunity down the left in those last few minutes, and I was able to connect and find the net.”
Jones had earlier scored in the 34th minute to double the lead for Cardiff.
